Mugaba Palace in Mbarara, western Uganda, has reopened after a major restoration aimed at boosting cultural tourism and preserving the heritage of the Ankole Kingdom.

The historic Mugaba Palace in Mbarara, western Uganda, has officially reopened after a major renovation aimed at promoting cultural tourism in the region.
Located on Kamukuzi Hill, the palace was once the residence of the Omugabe of the Ankole Kingdom and remains one of the most important cultural heritage sites for the Banyankole people.
The restoration project, funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, cost more than UGX 7 billion and focused on preserving the historical architecture and cultural significance of the palace.
With the reopening, Mugaba Palace is expected to become an important tourism attraction in western Uganda, giving visitors an opportunity to explore the rich traditions of the Ankole Kingdom, including cultural exhibits and the history of the region’s famous Ankole long-horned cattle heritage.
Tourism authorities say the site will help diversify Uganda’s tourism sector beyond wildlife safaris by promoting cultural heritage and historical tourism experiences.
